With Hallowen and Guy Fawkes night approaching we rather thought we would try to give the arboretum a bit of a spooky feel.
Our intention is to make 4 or 5 scarecrows and put them up around the arboretum towards the end of October when the witching season begins.
We have no experience in building scarecrows. This week we had a go at making our first prototype to see what it involves and make all those beginner's mistakes.
I don't think we shall win any prizes but we certainly had fun.
It wasn't all fun and games with Mr Scarecrow. We completed several other minor tasks around the arb.
Ram brought in some Irises, which we have placed in a small group by the entrance gate.
We wheel-barrowed some top-soil that we have acquired down the path and topped up the soil beside the path where our new drainage has gone in. It is rather unlevel here.
We also went looking for our British Blue-bells which we remarked near the pond area last spring. We intend to lift some and spread them around the arboretum with a view to improving the spring display.
