Bird Nesting Boxes

Howie and Phil continued to inspect our bird nesting boxes. Many of them were in good condition and were simply re-fixed into place.

We have been attaching 2 screws to the bottom of the boxes and then using garden wire wrapped around the tree trunk to securely fix the box in place.

For various reasons, some of the boxes have been moving out of position and end up at an angle. Hopefully, the wiring will solve the problem for next year.

A more serious problem that we have encountered is the damage to boxes by woodpeckers.

In total, we have 9 boxes that have been seriously damaged by woodpeckers. These have been taken down and are ear-marked for repair.

With the cold and miserable weather closing in, repairing the boxes will provide a convenient indoor activity at some point in the future.

Other activities

The day being cold, but bright and dry, and the ground not being too soft, provided an opportunity to give the grass a much needed cut.

The dahlias that were planted out underneath the front gate noticeboard have also now been safely lifted, cleaned and stored away for the winter period.
